There have been some rumors about The Crow getting a remake for some time now. As of today, the rumors have been confirmed, as they have officially cast the lead role for Eric Draven. Jack Huston, the masked man from Boardwalk Empire will be stepping into Brandon Lee’s shoes, in the Relativity Studios remake. It was originally thought that the role would be filled by Luke Evans, but he had to step aside, because he is involved in the Disney remake of Beauty and the Beast, as Gaston. Are all the movies today remakes?
Personally I think the movie will be a huge flop compared to the cult classic, but let’s wait and hopefully get positively surprised. But to be perfectly exact, they’re not really remaking the movie. They are readapting the book. James O’Barr the creator of the original comic book had this to say in a recent interview.
“…there is a Bela Lugosi ‘Dracula’ and there’s a Francis Ford Coppola ‘Dracula’. They use the same material, but you still got two entirely different films. This one’s going to be closer to ‘Taxi Driver’ or a John Woo film, and I think there’s room for both of them. Part of the appeal of ‘The Crow’ comics, after all, is that they can tell very different stories.”
“If you read the comic, Eric and Shelley never have their last names revealed, hopefully, this is one area the new movie being more faithful to the comic will come into play, and Eric won’t be going by Eric Draven in the new film. Luke Evans may play Eric, but Brandon Lee will forever be Eric Draven … No one understands that fear more than me. Brandon Lee was a friend and I’d never do anything to hurt his legacy.”
“We’re including some music I’d wanted to originally, but just couldn’t get the rights to,” says O’Barr.
Some actual Joy Division songs. Some vintage Cure songs. I’m still pretty active in the music industry, and there is a lot of neo-goth bands out there, that have that same sound, and I’ve talked to some of them about contributing, and they’re very excited about it.”
Anyway, let’s wait for Devil’s Night again and hope this movie is more like the original one, which was amazing and still holds up today, than any of it’s sequels, which tried to kill the cult following.
