ExploreGeorge R. R. Martin, the author of one of the hottest book series today, has said that it is realistic to expect The Winds of Winter sometime this year. The Winds of Winter is the penultimate book in A Song of Ice and Fire series, which of course is what Game of Thrones is based on.
This may seem like it’s not a big deal, but George R. R. Martin is famous for taking his time with writing his books. The fifth book, A Dance With Dragons was published in 2011, while it was originally supposed to be released in 2006. He has struggled with some chapters where a lot of the characters come together, trying to find the right point of view character, through whom he would tell the story. At the time, the fans of the books got very upset, and so Martin has decided to not make any more promises unless he is sure that he can keep them. Some of the fans got so upset that it caused Neil Gaiman, another famous author to write on his blog, George R. R. Martin is not your bitch.
Just recently Martin has stated that the new book will be ready when it’s ready, but since then he indicated that this might happen this year. He has also said that he will skip this year’s ComiCon so that he has more time to write. Since the TV adaptation will already have some of the story lines surpassing the books in this season (starting in less than a month from now), Martin probably wants to make sure that the book readers aren’t too spoiled after watching the show. But that will only work for this season.
The producers of Game of Thrones have no contract obligation to wait for Martin to finish the last book, and they were told by Martin how the story will end. Which means that for the next season, the story will mostly surpass the books, and most likely things will start changing more drastically. HBO has said that they want more than 7 seasons, but the producers said they want 7 and a movie.
So the show will most likely finish before the books do, but at least we can feel optimistic about the next book coming soon.
