One Piece is perhaps at the top of the hill of all mainstream anime. There’s loads and loads of people who love it to bits, and the ones that don’t, usually say it’s because they don’t like the art design, or because they don’t like the dubbed versions. So let’s talk about art first.

The art is a bit more cartoonish at first glance, which makes it seem like there wasn’t enough effort put into it. But that’s just until you get used to it. I mean most series need about 2 or 3 or even 10 episodes to get you hooked, and this one is no different. But I think that after 2 or 3 episodes you won’t even notice the cartoonish art anymore, and you’ll grow to love it.

About the dubbed versions…yes it’s true, the 4kids dub is kinda horrible. It’s for kids as the name says. The newer dub is better, but I’d still recommend watching it in the original Japanese. It’s not dumbed down for a younger audience in that one.

Now the story itself is pretty simple at first. It’s about a kid who wants to be the greatest pirate ever looking for One Piece, a treasure left behind by another great pirate. This is basically what drives him from one adventure to another. What makes One Piece a truly great anime are the characters. The start of the series takes some time for you to get to know them, and after that you’ll find that each and every character brings something new to the table and they’re all there for a reason.
