Berserk, like most of the great animes is based on a manga. A manga that has over 300 chapters. That was turned into an anime with only 25 episodes. You might think that would make it feel dumbed-down somewhat, that it would lose most of the magic. You would be wrong.
The story is set in a medieval time, when demons walked the Earth. It tells the story of a young mercenary called Guts who meets a charismatic and deadly man called Griffith, while fighting on the front lines. Guts has a demonic mark on his neck which attracts demons to him, and he’s out there looking for vengeance upon the person who gave him the mark. He’s also super strong, since he’s been fighting for survival since he was a child. On the other hand Griffith is a natural born leader, who possesses a strange relic, an egg-like pendant bearing ominous notions.
If you’ve read my articles before you will have noticed that the soundtrack is very important to me. And to be honest, most movies, shows and animes don’t really have that much to show for it. This one does. It has everything from joyful dance songs to ominous bone-chilling music. The voice acting is equally superb.
The one thing it does lack is the animation. It unfortunately feels dated now, and there are a lot of stillshots. There are also not enough frames per second for today’s standards. But considering that Berserk is one of the greatest manga ever made, and this anime does it more than just justice, I think you won’t notice the lower quality because you will be too distracted by the story.
