Her real name is Tardar Sauce, and is owned by Tabatha Bundesen, or at least that what the owner believes. I don’t think you can ever really own a cat, and that’s probably even more true for this particular cat. But let’s not get off track here. It all began when Tabatha’s brother posted a picture of the cat on Reddit in 2012, after which people began to caption it, which turned it into a meme.
The cat seems to be in a permanent grumpy state, but in real life she has a form of dwarfism, which makes her face look the way it does. But it doesn’t really bother her, because the owners say she’s actually pretty lively. And she has good reason for being in a good mood. Since it got so huge on the internet, the owner could easily quit her job, since the cat earned her over 64 million dollars.
It’s not just the memes you see. It’s also the YouTube videos, the official merch, the Facebook page with over 7 million likes, a best-selling book, and a movie. Grumpy cat even has an agent, who believe it or not, also takes care of the Nyan Cat and Keyboard Cat.
‘I was able to quit my job as a waitress within days of her first appearance on social media and the phone simply hasn’t stopped ringing since.’ said Tabatha.
