Poltergeist just started playing in the cinemas around the world a few days ago. Is it really as scary as the posters would have us believe? It is after all a remake of a movie from 1982, which means we all know the story, or at least parts of it. Not only that, since the original is a classic in the genre, written and produced by none other than Steven Spielberg, there were dozens of movies who borrowed things from the original script (including Insidious, which has it’s third installment coming to theaters in a few weeks), which makes it even harder for us to see it as original.
But that being said, being based on a classic is the biggest problem the movie has. It has a fairly good story, with surprisingly good casting (Sam Rockwell steals the show), and good directing.
The Bowens, after Eric Bowen loses his job, need to move into a more affordable home. They find a house, near to where Eric’s wife Amy went to college, and it’s very affordable, because for some reason, a lot of people are moving away from the neighborhood. It’s also built on a piece of land where a cemetery used to be, but that’s fine, because they moved it to a different location. They just left the bones.
Ok, so we’ve seen all this before, but there are still elements of the story that make it seem like a new movie, and not like a complete disaster. If you’ve seen the original, you might not enjoy it as much, but since the original is over 30 years old, chances are it will find new audiences who will find it scary. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is scarier.
