Ghost in the Shell loves to ask you questions. What makes us human? Is it the soul or the body? If the soul is the memories that make you who you are, and if those memories can be erased and replaced, then who are you? If your body parts can be replaced completely by mechanical counterparts, how long before you are no longer human, but a machine?
The story of Ghost in the Shell is set in the year of 2029, where AI and cybernetics are a reality. To be honest it is a future that is more than likely to happen at some point, which makes the questions that I mentioned before all the more relevant. The universe in which it is set is given an amazing detail and the characters in it are incredibly well developed. It is truly an anime that even a person who doesn’t like anime can love. Which by the way also makes it a great starting point for a newbie to the whole genre.
The story is one of those very intelligent stories that will make the viewer think, and bring their own philosophical values into the game. But even leaving all that aside, the animation at the time set the bar very high for all future anime. The music is also earth shattering. When you start watching it, it immediately grabs you and doesn’t let go until you are completely immersed in the beautiful scenery. I know I say this a lot, but whether you are a complete beginner or an old anime lover, this is the definitive anime that you absolutely have to see.
I’m sure you want to see what Ghost in the Shell t-shirts we found for you now, so I’ll skip the rest, just in case I spoil something.
