Limbo. It’s a simple game, they told me. And it is, to a point. It’s very straight forward. Everything you need is always right in front of you, all you need is logic, really. The controls are dead easy, you just need the movements controller, a button for jumping and a button for everything else. Even the graphics are simple. But you need to try it to see what makes it so special. It’s so much more than all that.

So how do you write about something that is so simple on paper, but so very deep and satisfying to experience? Well, basically it’s a 2D platform and puzzle game. Most of it is in black and white and shades of grey, and your character is basically just a silhouette of a boy. But let me try to do it more justice.

Things won’t look the same after you’ve played Limbo. It has a perfect combination of beautiful graphics, an amazing sound score, which is at points eye-watering and at times terrifying, and most importantly, it feels so very deep. When you’re playing it, there can be subtle changes in the landscape and music, that can turn a peaceful beautiful scene into a nightmare from your childhood.

But for me, the unique beauty of Limbo is pure dynamics of the game. Every puzzle’s solution is always right there, there’s no using of weird items that doesn’t really make sense, there’s no power-ups or secrets that you need to discover first. If something would work in real life, it will also work in Limbo. Sometimes it can be hard to be precise enough, or to do that one perfect thing, but you always know what needs to be done. But even saying that, the game is anything but simple.
