ExplorePortal is a puzzle game developed by some DigiPen students, who managed to impress the people at Valve. The idea was to create a different kind of game, a game that would challenge you in a way no other game before did. And they kind of did exactly that.
It’s basically a game where your only weapon is a portal gun. It’s exactly as the name suggests, a gun that can create a portal entrance and a portal exit. Not just anywhere though, only on certain kinds of surfaces. When you walk through the portal entrance, you end up at the portal exit, and vice versa. As an added bonus, you can also get other things to move through these portals, so for instance if you put a portal entrance under something, and the exit above that same thing, it’s going to keep falling forever.
The story, while very short, is also very fun and original. It’s mostly given to you through an electronic voice over. Its witty humor is very satisfying, especially since it is a machine talking. And there’s others as well. When you flip a turret that’s shooting at you on it’s head, it might just say something like “I don’t hate you.” back at you, making you feel sorry for it. Oh, and also, you’re an older Asian woman. You first realize this when you’re looking at yourself through a portal, but you’re not yet aware that you’re looking at yourself.
Portals also give you a funny feeling sometimes, when you see the back of yourself through the portal. It does kind of give you a special spatial kind of thinking, as in what happens if I fall through here and end up in another room falling up, which is what I meant when I said that there are quite unique challenges. Probably the only problem that Portal has is that it’s too short. The first few levels seem like an extended tutorial, and it takes a while before you get to the very challenging levels. Though when you do get there, they can bend your mind in weird ways.
It’s a very good game to have some fun with, and when you finish and it leaves you begging for more, you can always come back and get some Portal t-shirts from here!
