Pixels is one of those crazy Adam Sandler movies that are highly entertaining in the middle of summer when you’re too lazy to think about the plot, and you just want an hour or two of stupid jokes and nostalgic references that will make you go ahhh.
Though this one also includes Peter Dinklage (of Game of Thrones fame), Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, and Josh Gad. It’s kind of like Ghost Busters, except this time it’s aliens. Back in the good old days when we were still exploring space, NASA sent out a time capsule that included some of the great deeds of humanity, which for some reason included Pac Man and Donkey Kong. As the story goes, aliens actually received the message, misinterpreted it for a war declaration, and sent back their own versions of Donkey Kong and Pac Man. Now the fate of the world is in the hands of 4 geeks who were the best at beating those games.
Other games set to appear in the movie include “Frogger”, “Asteroids,” “Breakout,” “Centipede” and “Missile Command” from Atari Interactive; “Galaga” and “Dig-Dug” (Bandai Namco, who also owns “Pac-Man”); “Q*bert” (Columbia Pictures Industries); “Space Invaders” (Taito Corp); and “Joust,” “Defender,” “Robotron” and “Wizard of Wor” (Warner Bros. Interactive). Nintendo owns “Donkey Kong,” while Konami Digital Entertainment has “Frogger.”
“We approached them with a deep love for their characters and a respect for the elements that make them unique and iconic, and we’ve worked with the companies to incorporate those elements into the film,” said “Pixels” producer Allen Covert.
Oh, and did I mention? The movie is pretty much based on the short film in the video below.
