There’s a lot of Sherlock Holmes going on lately, with the movies featuring a passable Robert Downey Jr., and the TV show featuring the incredible Benedict Cumberbatch. And while most movie and TV franchises these days like to explore the origin stories, Mr. Holmes went in the other direction. We find Sherlock Holmes in his 90s, his mind slowly fading away and still troubled by a case he couldn’t solve 50 years ago. And who better to play an aging Sherlock Holmes than Ian McKellen, Magneto and Gandalf in one person.
The movie about the 93 year old Mr. Holmes is based on the 2005 Mitch Cullin novel “A Slight Trick of the Mind”. Personally, I love Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch to bits. I love how very intelectual they made him and how it gives us, the audience a chance to be a part of solving the mistery. It’s fast, it’s exciting and it’s very thrilling. But I think Mr. Holmes is amazing non the less, even though it goes in an entirely different direction. It’s about a man stuck in the past. It’s not a super hero, it’s simply a retired detective in a movie about ageing, death, fact and fiction.
To be fair, both Ian McKellen and director Bill Condon already did a similar movie about the last days of director James Whale, and that movie got Ian McKellen his first oscar nomination. The surprising element in the movie is that Sherlock isn’t really all that amazing. Most of the stories about him were actually fiction made up by Dr. Watson. As I mentioned earlier, Mr. Holmes is also slowly losing his mind. When he sees a doctor, he instructs him to put a dot into his diary every time he can’t remember something, and by the end of the movie, the diary is as full of dots as a leopard.
