Have you ever played any of the Mario Kart games? It doesn’t have the realistic approach to racing like a lot of the racing games as you can imagine. There’s pretty much nothing less realistic than racing with a mushroom, a princess and a dinosaur, all throwing shells at each other. But Nintendo certainly struck gold with making this game, and it’s definitely one of the most fun and enjoyable games you could possibly imagine.

In my opinion, the only game that comes close to Mario Kart in the same kind of genre is Micro Machines. They’re both fun, they both use tactics where you can battle your opponents with weapons, and they both have very original stages. I suppose Mario Kart is more fun as a multiplayer game, where Micro Machines had more original stages. Mario Kart is pretty much responsible for every other kart racing game out there though. From all the cheap crappy games to the newer ones like the beach buggy racing on the smartphones, it’s all started with Mario Kart.

If you look at it today, you might think there’s nothing special about it, since there are a million games like it. But at the time of it’s release it was the only game like that. And even with that, it’s still an amazingly fun and original game to play, even compared to anything else.

It was also the first real big game that introduced other characters from the Mario universe into a different genre. You could never see Yoshi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad or anybody else outside of the Mario world before this game. And Nintendo saw a good opportunity with that, so they made a whole bunch of other wacky sports games featuring them after that.
