Tekken was developed by Namco in 1994. It’s a fighting game in which, kind of like in Mortal Kombat, there’s a tournament. You get to select a character, and beat the tournament, and if you do it successfully, you become the King of the Iron Fist, and a cutscene shows your character taking over a company which then hosts the next tournament (which happens in the next game). It’s also the best selling fighting franchise of all time.
I didn’t really like Tekken all that much when it first came out, I’ll be honest. But when Tekken 2 came out it was a game changer. I had the Playstation and the graphics and the playability of games were just amazing compared to PC, and Tekken 2 brought the fighting genre to a whole new level and made a fan out of me. There are now of course seven Tekken games, along with a bunch of spin offs and even three movies out there.
Then Tekken 3 came out and it was even better. It had beautiful CGI videos between the fights and it just felt amazing to play it. So naturally everybody was hoping for something spectacular with the 4, though for me personally it was a bit of a let down. But then 5 stepped up and made up for everything that was missing in 4. The graphics were so good that it almost looked like you were playing a movie. Tekken Tag Tournament was also great, simply by bringing the game into the next generation. Then Tekken 6 came and it wasn’t really all that good, to say it politely.
Tekken 7 is coming very soon and it was actually already released on the arcades in Japan. By the looks of it, it’s gonna be fantastic, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. Meanwhile, make sure to get one of the t-shirts below and wear it while you’re waiting for the game to come.
