I just started playing FEZ a few days ago. I was looking for a cool platform game to play and nearly any list of best platform games that I was looking through had FEZ on it somewhere near the top. I’ve heard about the game before of course, but I never tried to until now.

I never tried it for one very shallow reason. The game looks like crap. No, seriously. I actually owned a Commodore 64 and I swear there were games on that prehistoric thing that looked better than FEZ. The other problem with FEZ is that when you look up a video on Youtube, it looks so damn easy. There’s nothing to kill you and if something is too far away you just pull it closer somehow. But FEZ I’ve learned recently is a game you have to try to fully appreciate.

First you get used to the uglyness. Then you learn more about it. Turns out there’s a whole philosophy/story behind it. Since I haven’t finished the game yet I don’t know how far off I am on this, but so far it seems that the littly ugly white creatures are basically a two dimensional species who worship owls because they can turn their heads in 360 degrees and therefore experience 3D. But then one of these creatures (named Gomez by the way) gets a magical fez that allows him to turn his perspective and basically turn the universe into a cube which he can then rotate.

You have no idea how complicated a map can be until you see the FEZ map. Not to mention the game basically throws you in, gives you the basic controls and that’s it. With the majority of the riddles and puzzles, the shiny magical cube that is there to help you, simply states that something looks useful but has no idea what to do with it.

After my initial doubts the game has certainly left a huge impression on me, and so I’ve had to go and find some FEZ t-shirts. And here they are.
