Tomb Raider. That was a revolution in the gaming industry if I ever saw one. Before Tomb Raider, every single shoot ’em up game had a macho man killing machine as the protagonist. Until Lara Croft came. She was kind of the female version of Indiana Jones, only much hotter. So hot in fact, that they needed Angelina Jolie for the movie. For quite some time, there wasn’t a single Expo or Comicon that didn’t include several Lara Croft cosplays.
I actually know that there is a video game magazine somewhere in Europe where they actually judged how good the graphics were based on how round Lara’s boobs got through the years. As soon as Tomb Raider hit the stores it was an amazing success. Just as a side note, Lara was originally supposed to be a man, but since they were afraid of a lawsuit from the Indiana Jones people, they dropped the lead character and promoted a side character. And thus a legend was born.
Tomb Raider hit the store shelves in 1996. It had crazy competition in Mario 64. It went to number one in a matter of hours and stayed there for a good part of a year. It was a global success. She was on the covers of magazines, and not just gaming ones. The magazines that featured her on the cover ranged from fashion to finance. She was in commercials for Visa, she went on tour with U2. Not to mention she gave jobs to many models over the years who were chosen as the face for Lara Croft with each new game.
By the time Tomb Raider 2 came out, they had perfected every detail of the game, which made it even better. They pretty much made a new Tomb Raider every year, each one better than the last. Unfortunately though, all that stopped after the third one. Or at least the playability went down, while her boobs still got rounder. They did kill her for a reason, and I guess she should have stayed dead. Be we still fondly remember her and if you agree with us about her being one of the baddest female characters ever, grab some Tomb Raider t-shirts below!
