Guitar Hero is the game that I hated for no reason for a very long time. I play guitar, the real kind. So when I thought about devoting hours of practice to playing a plastic guitar instead of a real one, I just couldn’t comprehend why anybody would bother. But then I tried it, and as it turns out, playing Guitar Hero was a lot more fun than actual practice. Sure, if anybody would put so many hours of practice into a real guitar, they’d be a pro in no time, but for most people, it’s just way more fun to have people cheering you on, even if they are virtual.

The other big thing with Guitar Hero is that you get to see your progress. With a real guitar it usually takes you some time to learn the basics, and the first few songs. You’re quite happy with that, so you normally stop for a while. After some time you get another breakthrough and you get to the next level, and then you stop again, and so on and so on. With Guitar Hero you see constant progress. The first time you play a song, you’re gonna suck at it. The next time you’ll be better. Pretty much every time you start a song, your score will be higher than the last time, and that’s a very powerful motivator.

Though it’s true, if you turn the tables, you haven’t really learned much from Guitar Hero, and you learn a lot by playing a real guitar. But to be fair, Guitar Hero songs can actually be harder to master than real songs. With Guitar Hero you usually have to play lead guitar, rythm guitar, and sometimes even the trumpets, piano, or whatever else, which means you end up playing a lot more notes than you would playing a real guitar.
