Wonder Woman, a headliner in the comics, animated universe, and pretty much every other medium in existence except for live action movies, is finally getting her chance to shine on the silver screen. The Amazon warrior princess is to be played by actress Gal Gadot in both the upcoming Batman V Superman as well as a Wonder Woman solo film that is slated to release in 2017. For fans of the most popular female superhero, it’s about time. In fact, there’s plenty of reasons to be confused why it has taken the powers that be this long to recognize Wonder Woman’s big screen potential. While the list could certainly be much longer, here are five of those reasons why Wonder Woman is such an underrated superhero:
Reason #1: She can go Toe-to-Toe with Superman
Wonder Woman is no pushover. In fact, she is one of the most powerful superheroes in the DC universe. She has very near the same strength and speed as DC’s undisputed champion, the Man of Steel, as well an assortment of magical weapons and a lifetime of combat training. Many regard her as one of the most skilled hand-to-hand fighters that DC has to offer, which is saying something for a universe that includes the likes of Deathstroke, Black Canary, and Batman. While everyone in the world is caught up in who is going to win in a fight between Superman and Batman, everyone seems to forget that the other hero set to make an appearance in the film could very likely take both of them down.
Reason #2: Wonder Woman and Batman Have a Thing for Each Other
Okay, so it might not ever have come to anything serious, but there has always been a certain degree of sexual tension between Diana and Bruce Wayne. Through both the comics and the animated series, the two of them have spent a great deal of time exchanging flirtatious remarks and suggestive one-liners. Will we get to see any of that relationship in the upcoming films? Maybe, and maybe not, but either way, it is certainly a reason to look forward to Wonder Woman’s appearance.
Reason #3: Wonder Woman Gives Female Superheroes a Good Name
Let’s think back: how many female superhero movies have we seen produced so far? There was Catwoman, but most people prefer to pretend that movie never existed (justifiably so). Elektra got a decent role alongside Daredevil in his film, but past that the champion of female superheroes is Black Widow, who will in all likelihood never get her own film or ever be much more than a sideshow to whichever (male) superhero she is fighting alongside. With Wonder Woman, this is all set to change. Not only will she receive a movie that is entirely her own, she’s set to play a huge part in all phases of the DC cinematic universe. Wonder Woman will be the representation that female superheroes have long deserved, and that is something the comic world has been needing.
Reason #4: She’s a Founding Member of the Justice League
Wonder Woman is a cornerstone in what is undisputedly the most powerful fighting force ever imagined. Wonder Woman, alongside Batman, Flash, Superman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Aquaman, is one of the founding members of a league of superheroes that is the crowned jewel of the DC universe—the Justice League. Sure, plenty of other heroes, both male and female, would later join, but Wonder Woman was one of the first, and that alone should earn her some recognition.
Reason #5: She’s a Fresh Face
It’s a fact that just about the entire world can quote Batman’s origin story word for word by now. The same goes for Superman. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, is a clean slate. Her origin story is not incredibly well known and gives directors access to plenty of fresh new material. We’ve seen in past years previously unknown superheroes get picked up and rocketed into popularity. Once upon a time, Iron Man was a B-list hero. Will the same happen for Wonder Woman? It’s hard to tell, but at least Hollywood will have access to a fresh face and fresh stories while still working with a top-tier superhero who is seriously underrated.
