Overalls. Pagers. Michael Jordan. Who doesn’t miss the 90s? It was a much simpler time back then. You could create a stylish outfit with just a t-shirt and denim, phones were a long way off of being smart, and the greatest athlete of all time was not a hard question to answer. But there was something more in the culture, something funny and cute and honest and heartwarming all at once… Full House, of course!
Central Perk and the Fresh Prince could cut it out ’cause your attention was taken; Joey always had you laughing and Jesse always had you swooning with every space filled in between with life lessons and gushy moments from Danny and the girls. Running for a solid eight seasons, Full House remains beloved in the memories of millions, redefining the meaning of family, shaping the mind of a generation, and, more importantly, jumpstarting the career of the Olsen twins (because whatever could we do without Passport to Paris).
The hit show’s influence is endless, but soon we thought we would watch it fade into the obscure distance of Nick at Nite reruns. But nay! It has been revived, brought back from the dead, with the help of a little project called Netflix! Throw in a bit of a pun and Fuller House is born! John Stamos. Bob Saget. Candace Cameron-Bure. John Stamos. Jodie Sweetin. John Stamos. With the exception of Mary-Kate and Ashley, the entirety of the cast is returning to relive the dream. And you can’t say they haven’t been getting around to let people know.
However, that’s not to say people don’t have any doubts. Any spin-off or remake has its fair share of scrutiny, so there’s definitely some negative buzz here and there. One main issue in question is the premise of Fuller House. Picture this:
DJ is happily married with three young’uns of her own until her husband abruptly passes away, leaving her distraught and overwhelmed. To help her out in her time of need, Stephanie and Kimmy move in with the family to pick up the pieces and keep moving forward. Filled with lots of laughs and a couple of tears, Fuller House is sure to warm the heart…
“But wait, that sounds awfully familiar?” you ask. Yes you’re right, you brainiac you. The spin-off is using almost the exact same premise (and possibly plot) of the original series. So it is a little understandable just why there are some eyebrows raised at an identical series instead of (as the classification of spin-off suggests) a spin on the story. But hey, the whole purpose of these remakes is to keep the original momentum going, and that is exactly what Netflix is planning to do! Plus, spin-offs can meet or even exceed their predecessors’ success beyond all odds – just look at Saved by the Bell and Better Call Saul!
So let’s all log on to our (or more likely, our friend’s) Netflix account, grab some nostalgic t-shirts for you and the whole extended family, and tune in to Fuller House‘s premiere on Friday, February 26. And if it is everything you wanted and more or if you expected something different than what you got, let us know in the comments!
