Marvel may have got a quick start out of the gate, but DC refuses to be bested. In fact, DC’s latest slate of movies is set to top anything Marvel has come up with and finally give comic fans what they’ve been wanting all along—a fully developed, realistic universe with stories that actually make sense. Don’t get me wrong, Marvel movies are great, but there are reasons they just cannot compete with what DC is in the process of building. With that thought in mind, here are the top five ways that DC movies are better than Marvel movies:
- DC Movies are Gritty and Realistic
The DC cinematic universe has introduced a filmmaking and storytelling style that just feels real. The stories are plausible, the characters flawed, and cinematography breathtakingly realistic. There is none of the constant slapstick humor, cheesy puns, and overdone one-liners found in most Marvel movies. With DC, we see what would happen if superheroes existed in a world that was as real and complex and flawed as our own, and that alone makes them more interesting to see.
- DC Villains are Better
Marvel has Loki. Past that, pickings get pretty slim. Batman’s rouge gallery alone can topple anything that Marvel has put on film thus far. With villains like the Joker, Bane, Lex Luthor, and any number of other recognizable names, DC simply has more to offer in terms of a well-developed lineup of antagonists. Marvel struggles so badly with finding good villains that Iron Man has fought another man in a suit in two out of his three films, and in the third film they had to go as far as making one of their most iconic villains nothing more than a wasted actor just to add comedic relief. DC on the other hand has such entertaining villains that one of the most anticipated movies of 2016—Suicide Squad—is centered on the villains. This is a feat that Marvel could never hope to pull off with their current lineup.
- The Stories are Better Developed
With DC movies, the stories presented are rich and enveloping. There are plots and subplots and plenty to pay attention to. Sure, you can watch them for the action alone, but if you do, you are missing the best parts of the movie. With Marvel, all you really get is the action. Marvel movies are great for shutting off your mind and watching the fireworks, but DC movies offer all of that and more.
- DC’s Endgame is Better
At first glance, this one may seem like a toss-up. Marvel is building towards Infinity Wars, which is no doubt going to be awesome. DC is building towards the Justice League likely taking on a bigtime villain such as Darkseid—equally awesome. Marvel, however, is going to have a hard time getting there. The characters they’ve been setting up lately are just a little too…strange. Will a shrinking man and a raccoon with a rocket launcher be effective if they’re ever put in a movie alongside the likes of Captain America and Iron Man? That’s yet to be seen, but what will undoubtedly be effective is the Justice League—a team-up we have all waited far too long to finally see come to film.
- DC is More Nostalgic
For those of us who grew up watching iconic cartoons such as Batman the Animated Series, The Justice League, Young Justice, and Teen Titans, the characters in the DC universe just have more memories and nostalgia surrounding them than most of the Marvel universe. We got to see the animated versions of these characters voiced by legends such as Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, and now we get to see these same characters portrayed in a very real and gripping way on the silver screen. You can’t beat that, Marvel.
Do you agree that DC has it going on, or are you a lifelong Marvel fan silently planning your three page response to how this entire list is wrong? Either way, let us know, and be sure to check out these awesome DC t-shirts as well!
