It’s that time of the year again. Time to celebrate something that happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Somehow, within the past ten years, with the explosion of social media, a bunch of new “holidays” began to be observed: Pi(e) Day, Speak Like a Pirate Day and Star Wars Day, May the 4th be with you.
What started as mostly posts on the internet has evolved into some great events. A local club hosts a Star Wars themed dance night and many bars host Star Wars movie of trivia night. My prediction is that it will someday be as big a holiday as Christmas, Halloween or Thanksgiving.
But why wait for that to happen? Here’s some suggestions on how to celebrate this Star Wars day.
1. Trim a Star Wars Tree
You know that smaller, fake Christmas tree you have in storage that you use in your office or to accent your real Christmas tree? Well pull it out and decorate it with your Star Wars ornaments, or make your own out of your actions figures and Legos. Top it off with a Darth Vader, Storm Trooper or X-Wing Pilot helmet.
2. Bake Star Wars Day Cookies
There’s plenty of Star Wars shaped cookie cutters out there. But if you can’t get your hands on some in time, it’s not too difficult to mold dough in the shape of a Tie Fighter, the Millennium Falcon, or Princess Leia’s hair buns (or bake Princess Leia Cinnamon buns). And if even that is too challenging for you, just bake round cookies and say their Death Stars or Starkiller Bases.
3. Sing Star Wars Carols
So most of the music does not have music with lyric. If you have the original release of Return of the Jedi, you can sing “Lapti Nek” (personally I skip over the “Jedi Rocks” replacement song, it’s annoying). Or sing along with JJ Abrams to “Jabba Flow” from The Force Awakens. Or just make up your own words to the theme song like Bill Murray did way back when on Saturday Night Live.
Or sing along to this frighteningly prolific scene from The Muppet Show:
Or make yourself beautiful music:
4. Watch The Holiday Classics
I’m sure many of you plan to watch marathons of the films, Clone Wars or Rebels. Or, if you’re old school, episodes of Droids and The Ewoks (or heck, even the two Ewok adventure movies). But if you are a hardcore fan, you’ll be digging out your bootleg of The Star Wars Holiday Special and watch the wookie life day celebrations. OK, this may be torture to most of us fans, but you’ve got to at least speed through to the Bea Arthur song:
Please dress accordingly:
5. Wear Your Best Star Wars Suit
So you could put on your storm trooper or Darth Vader suit, but not sure how much your boss and co-workers would appreciate you showing up in it.
You could wear these (singing along with cheesy song is optional):
But best not to show them off in public. How about some cool t-shirts that you can proudly show off? May the 4th be with you…. Always!
