When Ned Stark confronted Cersei with the truth about Joffrey back in season one, Cersei informed Ned about the most important rule – “When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.” I bet none of us truly understood at the time how important that rule was. But given the events of this week’s episode, “Blood of My Blood,” that rule makes more sense than ever, as literally everyone seemed to prepare in one way or another to throw down.
It seemed that this week was all about someone starting a fight, provoking a fight, or drawing a line in the sand. Sam Tarly looked to start a fight with his father after he returned home to Horn Hill and his father’s hatred towards him, and that same hatred that is now toward Gilly and little Sam for being Wildlings. Sam even went the extra step to take the family sword. In King’s Landing, Jaime Lannister led a Tyrell army to rescue Queen Margaery, only to discover that King Tommen has fallen under the power of the High Sparrow, and united the crown and faith. Jamie is then stripped of his position. Now it’s becoming the Lannisters and Tyrells vs. The Faith and the King. In Bravos, Arya fails to kill her target on purpose and reverts back to her old ways, even retrieving her sword, Needle. The Waif, witness to Arya’s failure, has been granted permission to kill her. Arya then waits for the Waif to come and get her. In the Riverlands, the Frey’s lose Riverrun to the Blackfish, and now must fight to get it back. Finally, in Vaes Dothrak, Daenerys and Drogon reunite and she convinces the Dothraki to follow her across the sea to retake the seven kingdoms. Like I said, it was all about starting or provoking a fight somehow.
By far, the most exciting news from this week’s episode was the return of Benjen Stark! That’s right, after six seasons and 52 episodes, the former First Ranger of the Night’s Watch has come back to save the day- well, he saved Bran and Meera from Wights. He revealed that after his party left the Wall all those years ago, they were attacked by Wights and he was stabbed. Before he turned, the Children of The Forest saved him by turning him into a type of White Walker similar to the Night King. He then said he was summoned by the Three-Eyed Raven to help Bran prepare for the oncoming war.
There were no new adventures for Jon Snow, Sansa Stark, Winterfell, Tyrion, the Iron Islands or the Wall this week.. But what’s truly sad is there are no updates about the greatest romance in the History of Romance- Tormund and Brienne! We have to know more! Will they get together? When will they kiss? What will their babies look like? Looks like we’ll have to wait till next week for more answers.
The biggest question out of this week’s episode is where has Benjen Stark been this whole time? Has he been aware of what’s been happening? This is by far one of the more intriguing stories this week.
After last week’s tragic end for our beloved Hodor, it was nice to have a calmer episode where no one died- except for some Wights. But, with the end of the season only a few weeks away and the action building, I think it’s safe to say that we should grab our favorite Daenerys and Arya T-Shirts and prepare for a wild ride!
From our collection of game of thrones t-shirts, we bring you some epic ones to wear with every new upcoming episode:
