BB-8 is Great! 18 Shirts Featuring Our Favorite New Astromech Droid!

by on Sep 25, 2016

I did something before The Force Awakens was released that I had not done in a very long time… Bought a shirt with a character on it of I movie I’d yet to see. But there was something so appealing about BB-8 that I couldn’t resist adorning myself with the droid’s image. And my gamble paid off. BB-8 quickly won his way into my heart, as he did with so many other fans.

There’s something about BB-8’s appearance that’s so simplistically perfect. The use of two simple circles to create a character who is immediately recognizable in silhouette. Hmmm… when was the last time a character like that was created….

Next to his look, BB-8’s personality is what stands out. The droid is loyal to a fault. Smart and sensitive. And BB-8’s response to Fin’s thumbs up will go down as one of the coolest/funniest moments in Star Wars history.

(That flame may come in handy in making future friends…)

And because we live in a world where people want to know who you like best (Kirk or Picard, for example), many have posed the the question: R2-D2 or BB-8. Well, R2-D2 has stood the test of time, no doubt. He was our first and we’ll never forget him. But I dunno… I’m thinking BB-8 has the whole package. R2 could act like a jerk sometimes, especially with his long-term companion C-3P0 (granted, I think we’d all be a jerk if we had to hang out with Goldenrod for any amount of time). But BB-8 has a much nicer temperament. Maybe he’ll end up becoming one note in future episodes, but I’ll be interested to see how the ball evolves.

With BB-8’s popularity, and his unique look, our little friends may opt to get a few corporate sponsors:

Or the face of a big corporation:

Maybe BB-8 would not go that commercial. Maybe he’d end end up more like pop art:

Perhaps BB-8 will star in an existential German indie film.

He could be a motivational speaker:

A rock star!

Or a master of disguise:

(Do you want to build a snowman?)

His shape and personality makes for some interesting mash-ups…

And when Rey joins in, it’s all the more fun:

Last night, I saw a BB-8 Halloween in Target. I knew we’d see lots of Force Awakens costumes this Halloween, but wondered how people would do BB-8 (in this case, it was an inflatable costume). But there is no doubt that there will be tons of pumpkins carved in the bot’s image.

And for all of you who got one of those remote control BB-8s:

There’s one thing that’s sure, this personable droid is one very complicated piece of machinery….

But no matter what, I’m sure he’ll keep on rollin’!
