This week ends the second and final term of the 44th President of the United State, Barack Obama. Politics are a fickle thing, especially in this day and age. For as many people who love Obama and his family, there are almost an equal amount who do not. That’s the great thing about America; you don’t have to like our leaders. But for you non-Obama fans, I should warn you that the following is a love letter to Barack, Michelle, Malia, Sasha and good old Joe Biden.
From his original campaign poster, there was a sense this was going to be a different kind or presidency. You know the one, that now classic poster of a very subtle toned red, white and blue image of Obama with the word HOPE underneath it.
It has been imitated non-stop every since (I can’t tell you how many t-shirts I’ve seen parodying that image). And to a lesser extent, his “road” logo is also a well-known symbol of his presidency that may continue to be popular, uhm, well down the road.
What I noticed about Obama from day one is that he was such an eloquent speaker. Listening to him was always pleasurable, even if he was telling us not so good news. To me, his voice was calming, re-assuring. And the content of his speeches were always positive and felt inclusive of everybody.
And Obama was just… cool! Not only could he slow dance with his wife, but he could bust a move with Ellen DeGeneres. As well as keep up with that adorable 106-year-old woman. He’d often break into song, like “Let’s Stick Together.” He also played a mean game of basketball.
It was great to watch him entertain visitors at the White House. Like that little boy he let touch his hair. And taking a great photo op of being web slung by a junior Spider-Man. And he was able to name more Game of Thrones characters than I can (and I’m in the middle of Season Five). It was fun to see him out and about, talking to people while he was jogging, going out for pizza, and the infamously funny ice cream outing with two-fisting Joe Biden.
Obama and Biden did truly have a bromance. They always seemed to have each others backs. Joe was a little more of a shoot straight from the hip kind of guy. Often getting bleeped during press conferences. It was fun watching Biden and Obama having fun: trying on sunglasses, their jogging around the White House. And though the post-election Joe Biden Meme’s were not his creation, I have a sinking suspicion that he approved of them as some nice levity during the transition. I’m Obama and Biden will remain BFFs.
Then of course, there’s Michelle Obama. A First Lady filled with, charm, grace, and the right amount of spunk. And when it came to fun, she met her husband every step of the way (on the dance floor, too).
She impressed in the political arena as well. She had some great moments this past election that some joked of a political run. I’m not sure if I’d want that, I’d rather her be there as a voice of reason. Because of her, I will always go high.
Yes, I’ve tried to side step specific issues here, but for many of us, Obama did a great deal to help us and we cannot thank him enough. Just alone, being the first black president has shattered a huge glass ceiling. And even if sometimes it feels like we’re stumbling back, that may be only natural after this giant leap forward.
