The newest game of the Halo series, Halo Wars 2, is set to release February 21st. Are you excited? ‘Cause I sure am!
Some of my happiest gaming memories involve both the Halo Franchise and RTS (real time strategy). I come from a family who all love to game, and you wouldn’t believe the hours we spent on Halo in front of our TV and on RTS games in front of our PCs. I love the story of Halo, I love the units, and I love the gameplay of RTS. Halo Wars 2, like Halo Wars, is going to combine both – and it sounds totally awesome.
Halo Wars 2 is going to echo the original Halo Wars, but with a bunch of innovative, exciting new twists. It’s a RTS game set in the same universe as the namesake FPS (first person shooter) series. The player is going to be focused on controlling vast, complex armies, “shrewdly [directing] them in realistic warfare”. The game includes units we all know and love from the FPS Halo, like Scorpion Tanks, UNSC Marines…
…and, of course, the iconic Warthog. Who doesn’t love driving the Warthog?
Halo Wars 2 has been developed by the veteran developer Creative Assembly (the same guys who gave us Total War: Rome II and Total War: Shotgun 2). They’ve stressed that Halo Wars 2 is going to be a highly intuitive, accessible, yet immensely challenging experience – even for those who might not necessarily pick up an RTS game on their own initiative and might prefer other gameplay styles. There’ll be all sorts of unique gameplay options within the game itself that are completely new to the RTS genre. Players can enjoy the game at the speed they’re used to from the FPS series while still taking the time to lay out their battle plan, strategize, and enjoy the story. Units can be mixed and combined to create better, stronger units to suit the needs of the current battle. It doesn’t get much better than that!
“We’re really excited about how [Halo Wars 2] moves the story forward.” – David Nicholson.
The game is set on the “biggest Halo battlefield ever”: the Ark – a location first introduced in Halo 3. Yep, that Ark, the once created a millennia ago, the birthplace of the Halo rings. The player will enter the game as Captain Cutter, in charge of an army fighting to control the power of the mythical Ark, against a new villain: Atriox and his squad of violent space mercenaries.
Love Halo as much as we do? Can’t wait for Halo Wars 2? We get that. Check out the rest of our awesome Halo tees to tide you over while you anticipate the newest installment of the series.
