In the not too distant future, April 14, 2017 to be exact, Mystery Science Theater 3000 beams down from the Satellite of Love and into Netflix streaming. After hosting one of the biggest Kickstarter campaigns of all-time (raising nearly three times their goal), season 11 of the series has 14 episodes ready to go. And last week in Los Angeles, they hosted a screening of the first episode for the cast and crew along with their family and friends. So for those who were skeptical about MST3K’s return… we got movie sign!!!!!!
As most of you know, after Mystery Science Theater went off the air in 1999. But riffers gotta riff, and the spirit of MST3K lived on in the Mike Nelson lead RiffTrax and the Joel Hodgson led Cinematic Titanic. There have been a few MST3K reunions in that time; one at San Diego Comic Con in 2008. But the biggest was last summer when RiffTrax hosted a MST3K reunion that was broadcast in movie theaters all over the world. It was great seeing the old gang together, along with new series host, Jonah Ray. There was no doubt that they still brought the funny.
The new show has an all new cast, including geek goddess and god Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt as our evil scientist pair. Baron Vaughn takes over the voice of Tom Servo, and Hampton Yount is the new Crow. Will these new characters and voices have the same impact as the originals? Only time will tell, of course.
I’m hoping the new series will blend seamlessly into the old. Adding to the MST3K lexicon some new skits, songs and tag line like “Watch out for snakes!” and “McCloud!” Will the next Manos Hands of Fate be in this new batch of bad films? They’re saying we’ll see some old friends and new familiar faces. I’m hoping for a visit from Mr. B Natural.
But for sure, we know there’ll be our favorite bots: Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, Gypsy and Cambot! So to honor their return, here are some great t-shirts honoring those riffing robots and silhouettes pointing at the big screen.
For better or for worse, these bad, forgotten movies got a new life thanks to MST3K. Here’s some shirts celebrating those wild turkeys.
If you’re like me, you can’t wait to turn down the lights and turn up the volume. But watch out for snakes!
