23 Twin Peaks T-Shirts That Will Never Go Out of Style

It is happening again… That gum you like is going to come back in style… I know these quotes have already been used to stir excitement for Season Three of Twin Peaks on Showtime this May, but they are the perfect words to herald the return of a show filled with mysteries, riddles and secrets. Almost 26 years after the last episode aired, we are finally getting a new Twin Peaks season. I’d just about given up hope, but David Lynch and Mark Frost did not let us down. Here’s hoping, the new series answers all the questions many of us have been waiting a quarter decade to be answered.

For some, it may be hard to see that Twin Peaks was such a groundbreaking show, because so much of television that followed it borrowed heavily from its concepts. Strange characters, dark/violent situations, some actually funny comedy, and a mystery that, if David Lynch had his way, would never have been solved. And the music! Angelo Badalamenti brought a film soundtrack to television. With some help of the likes of Julie Cruise.

That’s what Twin Peaks was, film for television. The camera work alone was like nothing seen on television before its time. And a surrealism that to this day has never been paralleled.

What’s amazing is how well the show has stood the test of time, even if it may not seem as groundbreaking as it was. In 2014, the Blu-ray of Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery was released. Re-watching it was like falling in love all over again. And to finally have all the deleted scenes from the post series movie, Fire Walk With Me, was a dream come true… though some of those scenes made it a nightmare come true. But there was no doubt, Twin Peaks was still an amazing piece of television.

Yes, I agree with those who say it lost its way after the murder of Laura Palmer was resolved (somewhat). As I mentioned above, David Lynch never wanted it to end, but had to bow to pressure from the network. And Lynch was also off filming Wild At Heart so could not give the show the attention it needed. And though the slack in the middle of the second season may have been what caused it to get cancelled (or more likely, the fact the network kept changing its time slot), it picked up at the end with the chilling Windom Earle story and the search for the Black/White Lodge.

There is also some debate on the prequel movie, Fire Walk With Me. I agree, that when it was released, I would have preferred to see what happened next, rather than what came before (we do get a little post-show information on the DVD). But when I watch it again, I realize it is a masterful film. The Red Room scene alone is probably one of Lynch’s best.

But yeah, we were left with so many unanswered questions: Who died in the bank explosion? Is Leo going to be killed by poisonous spiders? Why was everybody shaking after eating cherry pie? How long will the real Dale Cooper be trapper in the lodge? And what evils will the doppelgänger Dale Cooper, possessed by the evil demon, Bob, wreck on Twin Peaks?

I’ve no doubt Lynch and Frost will answer those questions for us in the new series. As a matter of fact, some are answered in the recently released book by Mark Frost: The Secret History of Twin Peaks. We do hear of the fate of a couple of characters from the series, as well as some other elements that are sure to affect the new series. I’ve already read it, and can’t wait to re-read it after seeing where this season ends.

The sad part is some actors have passed on in real life. Jack Nance who played Pete Martell. Catherine E. Coulson who played the Log Lady; there is a rumor she may have filmed a little something before passing on. And filming was complete before Miguel Ferrer, who played the snarky, but loving, Albert Rosenfield died.

But the biggest loss is Frank Silva. By accident he was cast into the show as demonic killer Bob. And he was terrifying. I’m sure David Lynch will work some tricks to keep Silva’s image alive. But my guess would be that at some point, Bob will take on the form of his favorite host, Leland Palmer. I can see Ray Wise playing Bob as intensely as Silva.

Not only will it be exciting to catch up where we left with these characters, I can’t wait to meet some of the newer resident of the town. Andy and Lucy’s baby would be about 25, maybe following in his daddy’s stumbling footsteps.

May 21 can’t get here quick enough. But in the meantime, I’ve gathered some of Twin Peaks‘ finest t-shirts to help celebrate the return. So many good ones to choose from.

There’s no doubt that it’s the unusual characters that make the show.

Almost characters in themselves are the vast quantity of coffee and pie consumed on the show. I predict a 400% increase in cherry pie sales come May.
