Despicable Me 3 will hit theaters this summer. The adventures of reluctant father Felonius Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) continue. This time, he and his wife Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wig) have to battle South Park creator Trey Parker, voicing the roll of Balthazar Bratt, a has been child star of the 80s who has now turned his attention to taking over the world. And if that weren’t enough, it looks like we meet Gru’s long lost twin brother, Dru (also voiced by Steve Carell). And it looks like he convinces Gru to go back to being evil.
But I think the question on most people’s mind in the third installment of this franchise is: what are those cute and crazy little Minions going to get up to this time?
There’s no denying that, as fun as these movies can be, it’s the minions that people come out to see. These little yellow followers who wear mostly blue jump suits and goggles (and come with one or two eyes) have become more popular than the movie that spawned them. They were the teasers for Despicable Me 2. They even have their own ride at Universal Studios Hollywood: Minion Madness. And in 2015, they’ve got their own movie.
Solo, they did not seem to do as well as they do in the Despicable Me movies. Perhaps too much of a good thing? Or they are more fun as comic relief in a movie that’s not all about them. Be interesting to see if this 4th screen appearance of the Minions will still be enjoyable, or if they worn out their welcome. (I, for one, hope not).
I am a little more interested in the newer addition to this franchise: Trey Parker’s Balthazar Bratt. In the teaser trailer of Despicable Me 3, it was all about him. To the point where most of us were not sure what movie was being advertised. The franchise seems to be cashing in on the 1980s nostalgia phenomena (spurred on by Stranger Things, and sure to continue with Stephen Spielberg’s adaptation of Ready Player One). I think the idea of a bitter 80s child star as a villain is brilliant. And it looks like we’re going to be assaulted with tons of 80s references. Hoping they are in good balance with the Minions.
And it will be interesting to see how the co-creator of South Park does playing for the younger set.
But there is no doubt that the star of this show is still Steve Carell. This time we get twice as much from him in the voice department. Dru does sound very different from Gru, so we’d be able to tell them apart with our eyes closed (not that we’d want to close our eyes during the movie, we may miss something). But playing double duty (I’m sure this would make the Minions giggle), may help give more energy to Carell’s third performance, keeping it from becoming stale.
Overall I have hopes for Despicable Me 3. It looks like it’s taking the story in a good direction. Hope they aren’t cramming too much into it, but sure, no matter what, there will be lots of laughs. And did I mention Minions?
Here are some cool Despicable Me T-Shirts I dug up. As you can imagine, they’re mostly Minions. Still, they’re nothing to shake a banana at!
