This summer, a new Transformers movie will explode (and explode and explode) on to the big screen. We’ve reached the fifth installment of this Michael Bay Produced franchise, entitled Transformers: The Last Knight.
For some, they have been highly anticipating this new Transformers movie. For others, they dread the idea of these characters they love being further dragged though the big screen mud. Ever since the original Transformers, there have been polarized reactions to the series. So where do you fall? Do you love the Transformer movies? Or do you hate them?
What’s Transformers without a little us vs. them? But in most cases, it was Transformers vs. Decepticons. That battle started way back in 1984 with the advent of the cartoon series. A series based on a line of toys created by Hasbro. I wonder if the creators would ever think that the toys would still be popular over 30 years later, and still pumping out movies even larger than Megatron.
I get it. A generation of fans were raised on the Transformers cartoon series. And though the movies may be bigger and filled with amazing special effects, there is no doubt that these movies are nothing like the cartoon. To many, they are filled with too many explosions and not enough character development. The stories are wafer thin, and the dialogue is at times, downright goofy.
And many who enjoy these movies get that, but just don’t care. They are there for the fun of it. The roller coaster ride of big explosions and shoot ’em ups. Cool machines battling other cool machines. The bigger the better.
So what does Transformers: The Last Knight have in store? First off, it looks like Mark Wahlburg is back as the Optimus Prime re-builder, Cade Yeager. We last left him under the protection of the Autobots while Optimus Prime goes off to meet The Creators. And possibly his fate.
The first teaser reminded us that Optimus Prime has left Earth. And without the big daddy Transformer there to play peacekeeper (I’m assuming), a war strikes up between mankind and the Transformers. Looks like Bumblebee remains on our side. And somehow, Cade finds himself working with an English lord, played by none other than Sir Anthony Hopkins. They investigate why the Transformers have such an interest in Earth and keep coming back.
The film appears to have a split timeline. We see the Transformers are also taking on the Nazis. Now, I’m not sure if this story is in the past, or a parallel timeline. I do know they made a bit of a row by turning Winston Churchill’s birthplace into a Nazi headquarters. But Michael Bay assured the public that Churchill will be respected as a heroic character in the film.
Who knows? Maybe this new mythology will add some gravity to the series. Or maybe it’ll be just some more blow it up fluff. But I suspect, those who loved the other will love this one. And those who didn’t, won’t. But, for die hard Transformer fans, regardless of if you like the movies or not, there’s lots of amazing shirts out there for you. Some, are more than meets the eye!
