June is gay pride month. In major cities all around the world, there will be parades and celebrations of the LGBT community. It’s the time for those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (or transsexual), and their allies to show pride in who they are.
As always, I do my best to avoid politics in my blogs. There are plenty of other blogs for that. But there is no denying that the LGBT community has constantly had to struggle for rights and equality. And though things have slowly gotten better, there is always opposition. That is why there is a need for gay pride, to show how far we’ve come, but how much further we need to go.
Focusing on the positives, it’s great that gay marriage has become legal in the US, as well as many other countries. Giving hopes to those who are still struggling to achieve this. Sadly, this was followed by a bunch of other laws that seem to attack the LGBT community, but the amount of allies standing against these gives me hope that progress will continue to strive.
It’s great to see so many young people coming out to their friends and family. There are still horror stories of kids being thrown out of their homes, or bullied to the point of tragedy. But there are also stories of supportive parents and friends, gay groups at high schools and same-sex couples at prom.
And in this golden age of television, there’s some great gay characters. It was recently announced that Will & Grace will be returning. The show was groundbreaking as the first sit-com with prominent gay characters. Though bummed that The Real O’Neals was cancelled, there are still plenty of gay characters on network prime time, like Mitch and Cam on Modern Family. As well as Callie and Arizona on Grey’s Anatomy. And there’s Maura Pfefferman in Transparent.
Doctor Who has always been utopian in it’s portrayal of the LGBT community. And even more this season with the addition of lesbian companion, Bill Pots.
Speaking of sci-fi, gay pride can also be a time where you show off other interests you’re proud of, to show that there are more slices that make up the pie of you. Mmmm…. pie… drool… I’ve a particular affection for gay geeks and gamers. And love those gay Disney fans, too! So let your gay geek flags fly:
I firmly believe that nobody should tell another person how to live their life (unless, of course, that person is seeking advice on the subject). But an occasional reminder of how to live out loud doesn’t hurt.
It’s been wonderful seeing so many same-sex couples having children. They are strong family units and make great homes. But personally, I’d rather stick to being an uncle.
Plain and simply put, take pride in all you are every single day! And don’t forget to have fun, too! Happy pride everybody!!!
