It’s time for those crazy, lazy, hazy days of summer. Time to partake in some classic summertime activities: picnics, barbecues, pool parties and more. Let’s not forget a day at the beach and catching all those great summer blockbusters!
Those last two may be completely opposite activities, but you can’t go to the beach every day. It may rain occasionally (unless, like me, you live in Southern California, sorry).
Oscar season is over, so it’s time to enjoy some mindless entertainment (or head to the art house theaters, I’m totally cool with that). Veg out watching the latest action flick, or a stupidly fun comedy like Baywatch. Granted, the big screen version of the beach probably has a lot more beautiful people on it than the ones we go to, but that’s why they call it escapism.
Stuck at home for some reason? You can binge watch the original series . David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson and the rest brought the beach beauties into our living room every week. Who knew the lives of lifeguards were so exciting?
But when it comes to the beach, there ain’t nothing like the real thing. Yeah, you may have to deal with Speedo wearers who shouldn’t be wearing Speedos, but that’s a small price to pay for all the other fun to be had.
The best part of the beach is that you can either do a lot, or do nothing at all. Just want to lay on the warm, soft sand and catch some rays? Go for it! Just don’t forget sunscreen!
The most obvious beach activity is taking a swim in the water. Worried about the undertow? Then just wade in up to your waste. (Though wouldn’t you want to be rescued by a real life Baywatch type lifeguard?) But you’ve got to at least dip your feet in the water. You came all this way!
Need something more active? A volleyball game can get the heart pumping. But it may not be as well choreographed as the ones you see on movies and television.
Of course the best summer beach activity is surfing. Though if you’ve never surfed before, it may take you a while to get as good as the surfers on Baywatch… If ever. I just like watching them myself. I have enough trouble balancing on the pavement as it is.
What else? Paddle board, build sand castles, and don’t forget to snack on hot dogs and ice cream! So, when are we going?
More importantly, what will you wear? If not to the beach, then to whatever mundane task you have to do while dreaming of being at the beach.
Surf’s up!
