18 Lucifer T-Shirts: The Devil Gets His Due

The second season of Lucifer recently came to a close, and much to my surprise, it has been renewed for a third season. Now don’t misinterpret that: I love the show! It’s fun, funny and has come into it’s own with it’s mythology and over arching storylines. The cast is very solid and then there’s Tom Ellis! My God, he’s a handsome Devil. And he has great charm and comic timing.

Why I’m surprised that it’s still on the air is that it has the Devil as the hero (maybe anti-hero) or a prime time, main network show. Oh yeah, and he solves mysteries on the side. Watch your back Jessica Fletcher! It’s absolutely ridiculous, but it works.

As a matter of fact, last year at San Diego Comic Con, Tom Ellis lead the cast in singing the lyrics they wrote to the show’s theme. That must have gone over so well, that they showed up in an episode this season. “Crime solving devil, it makes sense; don’t overthink it.”

I’ve been a fan of the character of Lucifer Morningstar since Neil Gaiman first made him a main character in the Sandman comics story line, Season of Mists. I believe this was even before the Vertigo line was named Vertigo. But Lucifer decided to give up running Hell and move to LA to play piano in a bar (I don’t think it was called Lux back then). The character was so popular, he ended up in a couple of mini-series before finally getting his own monthly book.

The plots of the Lucifer comic were much more mystical, and no he did not help the LAPD solve crimes. So, I get why some fans were upset with the television adaptation of the comic book. And at first, I was like “What the Hell?” But I stayed because of Tom Ellis’ charm, and soon enough, I was hooked on the characters and the more mystical story arcs. And hey! It’s fun watching the Devil play detective. Questioning suspects by asking “What is it you truly desire?” Some of the answers have been downright hilarious.

I wish they’d spent more time on the mystery of Lucifer’s missing angel wings in the first season (though it looks like the plot may have thickened on that at the second season). But bringing in Lucifer’s mother in season two was the perfect twist. Especially having her played by the beautiful Tricia Helfer. And the idea that Chloe was created by God to show up in Lucifer’s path turns this “buddy cop” program on it’s head.

There’s no doubt most of us tune in for Ellis’ Lucifer, but his supporting cast is a force to be recorded with. Starting with his protector demon, Mazikeen (Maze for short). It’s fun to watch her being bad ass, even more fun watching her try to act human with Chloe and Chloe’s little girl, Trixie.

Lucifer’s good brother, Amenadiel, has been going through a roller coaster with both his emotions and his powers. Can an angel soul search? This one has been and it’s been amazing to watch.

And let’s not forget the shrink to the supernatural, Dr. Linda Martin. What started as a tryst with the Devil ended up as this therapist being a friend of their gang as well as a cohort. Of course, this has almost gotten her killed on occasion and nearly broke her mind. But she’s one tough cookie. I think the best for her is still to come.

So yeah, don’t overthink Lucifer, but there is a lot more there than just a procedural cop show. I can’t wait to see what next season brings! Oh, and here’s hoping I get to share some time with Tom Ellis at San Diego Comic Con again this year. Maybe I’ll get him to autograph my shirt.
