Girls don’t want boys, girls want a love like Gomez and Morticia Addams.
Okay, but seriously. Who doesn’t?
The Addams Family is an iconic franchise that featured in many people’s childhoods. Every year, I still get my friends together, we dress up and make spooky snacks, and watch The Addams Family for Halloween. Morticia Addams is #goals, okay?
The best part about The Addams Family will forever be the fact that it is, in its own way, satire. The Addams are a direct antithesis of the classic “American Dream Family”. While other “traditional” families in the franchise seem to struggle, often suppressing themselves, keeping secrets, and living with people they hate – the Addamses never subscribed to the traditional American Dream.
To others, they seem downright frightening. They’re obsessed with death, after all. Gomez is (probably) a murderer, and Morticia is a Gothic witch, Wednesday and Pugsley are morbidly obsessed with death and play at torturing each other, and Fester is…well…Fester. Instead of a dog, they have a disembodied hand that walks around on its fingers. Their butler seems to be Frankenstein, and their grandmother is also a witch.
Despite (or perhaps because of) this, the Addams Family is the most well-adjusted family in their social circle. Gomez and Morticia are obviously in love, even after years of marriage, and accept one another’s flaws and differences. Gomez adores Morticia, and Morticia seems to be the true head of the home. Morticia’s mother lives with them, rather than being sent off to a nursing home.
Wednesday and Pugsley may literally torture each other, but it’s obvious that they’re protective of each other in their own way. Gomez and Morticia never discourage their interests, whatever they may be. Instead, they wholeheartedly encourage them.
Even Pubert, in Addams Family Values, who is vastly different to the rest of the family is encouraged in his interests and accepted for his differences.
Above all else, the Addamses are fiercely loyal to each other. They thwart destiny time and time again to keep their family unit and home intact. Morticia stands up to Wednesday’s concerned teachers and the freaked-out parents of friends.
- “Wednesday’s at that special age where she has one thing on her mind.”
- “Boys?”
- “Homicide.”
Besides, The Addams Family may be the first instance in film and TV history where a family living an alternative lifestyle was portrayed in a positive light. They’re culturally significant and deeply beloved for that exact reason. The show and movies postulate that perhaps it’s okay to be different from everyone else. Perhaps it’s better to do what’s best for you and your family, rather than to try and fit your family in a pre-conceived box created by the outside world.
Plus, the films and tv show are fun.

In the words of Morticia Addams:
“What is normal to the spider is chaos to the fly”
Stay spooky.
