Y’all, I am so pumped. Are you pumped? ‘Cause I’m really, really pumped.
We’ve got a new Marvel film launching this week: Ragnarok – the big Marvel film of the year we’ve all been waiting for. It’s packed with an awesome cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo, and, of course, Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth.
The last time we saw Asgard, Loki was sitting on the throne disguised as Odin. Thor had left to go defend the Nine Realms, completely under the impression that all was well. Obviously, that wasn’t the case. We knew nothing could stay peaceful for long, especially not with Loki in control of things. We’re pretty sure we didn’t see him messing everything up this badly though. I mean, the apocalypse, really? That’s a bit much, even for Loki, but he must have had something to do with Hela’s assault on Asgard.
If you know me, you know I love the Thor films. There’s just something so undeniably cool about the way Marvel managed to successfully entwine Norse mythology with their own universe. Everything fits flawlessly. I have absolutely no trouble believing that the Thor we know and love is the same Thor of Norse myth. It still feels like mythology. The films are magical, they’re science fiction, they’re a little bit crackers. That’s why I love them so much. They manage to be gloriously melodramatic without losing the fun MCU touch.
Dark World was awesome, sure, but Ragnarok is going to be even better.
In Norse Mythology, Ragnarok is a dark tale full of fire and brimstone and death. It’s the “end of everything”, as Thor rightly calls it. Honestly, we’d probably expect a film about Ragnarok to be equally as serious and bloody. Marvel takes it a completely different direction, though.
Sure, the film still has elements of the original myth. The next time we get a glimpse into what’s going on with our favorite God of Thunder, he’s fighting the Hulk in a cosmic gladiator stadium, Loki’s in chains, and the Norse Goddess of Death, Hela, is totally fucking shit up in Asgard. Thor teams up with Bruce Banner and Valkyrie, the two of them run off to rescue Loki, and together they’re going to attempt to ward off the apocalypse and keep Hela from destroying the entire world.
“We need to stop her here and now,” we hear Thor saying in the latest trailer, “To prevent Ragnarok…the end of everything.”
Next thing we know, our team is backed by a score of Asgardian soldiers, making their way downtown to Asgard to fight Hela and, naturally, Fenrir.
It’s not all doom, death, and destruction though. The film is full of that cinematic humor Marvel’s famous for. There’s a lot of explosions, tons of cool-looking spaceships and weapons, and all-in-all, the film’s pretty charming. It’s just one big, fun adventure in space with all of our favorite Marvel heroes and villains. Considering both Dr. Strange and Civil War were pretty heavy films, this comes as a welcome surprise.
The film released in theaters today, but in case you can’t get over to a theater to see it yet, here’s some more awesome Thor t-shirts to tide you over until you can:
