With the latest film from Marvel Comics set for release on February 16, the anticipation is palpable. Black Panther is the eighteenth film from Marvel Cinematic Universe with a star-studded cast that includes Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Forest Whitaker.
The film has been in works for over 20 years, with Wesley Snipes initially pushing the project forward in 1992. Snipes felt Africa wasn’t portrayed well in Hollywood and sought to produce a film that would change that. “I think Black Panther spoke to me because he was noble, and he was the antithesis of the stereotypes presented and portrayed about Africans, African history and the great kingdoms of Africa,” said Snipes. Snipes involvement eventually waned, but now, years later, the project has finally come to fruition.
Black Panther takes place following the events of Captain America: Civil War. King T’Challa returns home to Wakanda, but when enemies conspire to bring down the kingdom, T’Challa must team up, as the Black Panther, with CIA agent Everett K. Ross and members of the special forces—to prevent a world war.
Will Black Panther be a hit? Only time will tell. But this is one I won’t be missing, and I’ll be watching while wearing my favorite Black Panther t-shirt!
