ExploreOn January 7th, 2015 two people entered into the headquarters of the Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, France. Two brothers believed that the magazine deeply offended their prophet, and so decided to get their vengeance by killing 12 people in the building.
Je suis Charlie, or I am Charlie is a slogan that went on Twitter as the hashtag #jesuischarlie a few hours after the attack and simbolizes free speech and freedom of expression all around the world. With the slogan we express empathy, outrage, and horror over the recent events.
I’m not here to debate whether it is right or wrong to insult someone’s religion with satyr, nor do I want to go into what counts as offensive. But I do believe that violence is never the answer, and I believe that freedom of speech and freedom of expression is one of the fundamental rights we as a society need to protect. You may not like what you hear sometimes, but it is very important to get all sides of the argument, and if we let a minority decide who can say what and when, things are going to go bad very fast for everyone.
The attackers believed that by shooting all those people they would force the magazine to apologize. They thought that they would avenge their prophet’s name. Instead they achieved the opposite. Most of the world stands behind the magazine now, and instead of cowardly shutting down, they decided to print 5 million issues instead of the usual 60.000 and people stood in lines to grab every last issue of it.
