ExploreRepublic Underground “URRU” saw the light of day in 2012 when Nicholas Alexander decided it was time to breath some fresh air in the clothing industry. After studying fine arts and clothing design in Milan, Italy he moved to New York where he worked as an design assistant. He began screen printing in 2008 for a local woman’s boutique and four years later he launched his own t-shirt brand, Republic Underground.
Republic Underground’s motto is “Hic Sunt Leones” which originates from ancient Latin cartographers who wrote this down on maps as a land marker to warn those of uncharted territory, which historically only the brave and the courageous were ever so bold as to venture forth onto these new lands. It translates to “Here there be lions“and Republic Underground believes there is a lion in all of us.
