Bleach is another anime well deserving a closer look. It follows 15-year old Ichigo Kurosaki who was always able to see ghosts, but wasn’t really that different until he got a special power from a Death God who failed to do her job. He then becomes a Soul Reaper (which is not unlike the grim reaper in the west). His job is to defend humans from evil spirits and to guide departed souls to the afterlife.

His soul reaping powers came from another Death God, called Kuchiki Rukia, who saves him and his family from a Hollow at the cost of injuring herself. During this encounter, with Rukia unable to defeat the hollow she transfers her Shinigami powers into Ichigo. Rukia later gets sentenced to death herself, for the offenses she did in the human world. So to help her out, Ichigo Kurosaki gets some help from some of his spiritually aware classmates, some of whom also have special powers, to help his friend.

The anime is filled with epic moments, and some very awesome fights, as well as a very good soundtrack and very good English voice over actors. There is also some talk that the series might return again this year. Fans of Naruto or One Piece might say it’s not as good, but fans of Bleach will always say it’s better. That’s just part of being in the top three mainstream shonen animes.
