Let’s be honest. Most anime typically has a male protagonist, most likely with super powers that make him bad ass. There’s not many that change that simple formula. While Kill la Kill does employ a lot of the cliches that anime uses, it is refreshingly different in one thing. The lead characters are girls. Girls in tight sexy uniforms that show their panties a lot, to appease boys but still girls nontheless.
The show actually looks like a more traditional anime with a more cartoonish style. You can see that they had a low budget sometimes, as the animation isn’t really the greatest out there, but the cartoonish art does fit with the sometimes over the top story. It does however have a superb soundtrack.
It needs to be said that this particular anime might take some getting used to. The first 12 episodes or so the plot doesn’t change much. It’s the typical monster attacks you see in animes so often. But after that initial bad start, the show goes into a higher gear and gets better and better.
Over all this is an anime definitely worth checking out. Don’t expect anything genius when you start watching it and you just might find yourself enjoying it immensely. If nothing else, the main character Ryuko is amazing to watch (and not just because action requires her to be half naked) and the soundtrack is good enough to download and play on your mp3 player.
