Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m not a fan of anything connected to My Little Pony. I don’t see the charm of it at all. But I’ll also be the first to admit that there’s no denying their popularity. Which means there’s a lot of people out there just waiting for someone to write about them and maybe find them a few t-shirts along the way.
It all started in 1983 (which coincidentally is also the year I was born) when Hasbro produced a line of plastic toy ponies marketed to girls. They were colorful, with big manes, and each had a different cutie mark on the side. Since then the ponies updated 4 times and grew in popularity, slowly at first all the way up to 2010, when they made an animated television series, which was more popular than anyone could dream of, which means the little ponies became immensely huge.
The series is called My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and follows a unicorn named Twilight Sparkle and Princess Celestia, her teacher, whose goal is to teach Sparkles about friendship in the land of Ponyville.
Twilight becomes close friends with five other ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie. Each represents a different face of friendship, and Twilight discovers herself to be a key part of the magical artifacts known as the “Elements of Harmony”. The ponies share adventures and help out other residents of Ponyville, while working out the troublesome moments in their own friendships.
The people who love this show aren’t just young girls anymore. The demographic expanded into, surprisingly, teenage boys and middle-aged men, who aren’t just watching it in secret when nobody can see them. And why should they?
They’re proud of it, and they even have a name for the fandom. They call themselves bronies. I guess one of the reasons why it’s so popular is that it has a kind of a retro story, with themes that the older audiences relate to. The ratings for this Hub network show broke all the records and the ponies still have a steady following.
