Pac-Man was originally released by Namco on May 22, 1980. Yes, it is almost 35 years old now. Since the beginning it was a huge success, largely thanks to it’s simplicity and playability. It has since then sold an amazing amount of merchandise, had an animated hit TV series and even a top ten single by Buckner and Garcia called Pac-Man Fever.

It might look ridiculous to today’s generation, but when Pac-Man first came out, all the arcade games had to offer were versions of Pong, and versions of Space Invaders. It invented a whole new genre of a game, and as such generated over 2.5 billion dollars in quarters alone by 1990, which makes it one of the highest grossing games of all time.

It has since then had at least 30 official spinoffs, including the very popular Ms. Pac-Man. It even has spinoffs up to this day, with a game for smartphones which you can download for free from the Google Play Store or the App Store. The original premise is that you are running around a maze, trying to collect all the white dots, while four ghosts called Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde chase you. If you collect a super pellet you get to turn the tables and chase the ghosts and even eat them. Nearly all of the spinoffs follow the same kind of theme, and even in the new one, which is a temple run type of game, you’re still running and collecting pellets. Google even made a Pac-Man doodle that you could play in 2010.

But don’t think this is just a game of the past, trying to make a comeback. In 2009 there were only 6 people in the world who have ever achieved a perfect high score, and there are still plenty of tournaments being played today.
