I mentioned Space Invaders in out Pac-Man article a few days ago. It’s another insanely popular retro game that was originally manufactured and sold by Taito in Japan in 1978, and later brought into USA by Midway. The goal of the game is very simple. You are the defender of Earth, and you need to shoot as many alien invaders as you can to get a high score. It starts off pretty slow, but as you shoot up row after row of moving aliens who are coming closer and closer, the game gets harder and faster.
The aliens also shoot at your laser so it’s up to you to be careful not to get shot while you’re trying to shoot all the aliens. If the aliens reach the ground, you lose, game over. So why was the game so popular? Today’s games have insanely better graphics, music, story, and pretty much everything else, so why was this game so damn popular? Well one answer is the originality. The game was pretty revolutionary for it’s time, including the music, which would now sound horrible, but was at the time groundbreaking. The other answer is playability.
While the game is simple enough for any child to play it takes ages to master, similar to Pac-Man or Tetris. And it never ends, it only gets harder and harder, wave after wave. It was so popular that arcades used to have whole sections reserved just for Space invaders, and it sold so much merchandise, that it came very close to beating Star Wars. It has also been remade more times than anybody would want to count, and you can still find remakes even today.
Which is why we found some of these awesome Space Invaders t-shirts which every retro gamer should have. Enjoy!
