Final Fantasy is one of my favorite video games of all time. It has everything, great graphics, good story, relatable characters, and it’s wildly entertaining. The franchise began in 1987 and was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi as a last try to get some success in the video game industry. He got much more than he expected though, since the game became hugely popular and has since then had 14 installments and multiple spin offs.
It is one of the best selling games of all time since it sold over 110 million copies and is still selling very well. They are also planning many more installments in the future. The game was successful on multiple platforms, including Nintendo, Playstation and PC. There were at least 20 spin off games and remakes and a lot of them had sequels of their own. There were also multiple animated series, as well as a full length feature movie called Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which was a pretty big success as well.
Most games involve the main characters fighting the forces of evil. In many games the main villain also isn’t the character you suspect, as the game often continues after you’ve defeated the character you believed to be the final boss. It’s kind of hard to summarize so many different games in one article, but wikipedia did a pretty good summary.
Stories in the series frequently emphasize the internal struggles, passions, and tragedies of the characters, and the main plot often recedes into the background as the focus shifts to their personal lives. Games also explore relationships between characters, ranging from love to rivalry. Other recurring situations that drive the plot include amnesia, a hero corrupted by an evil force, mistaken identity, and self-sacrifice. Magical orbs and crystals are recurring in-game items that are frequently connected to the themes of the games’ plots. Crystals often play a central role in the creation of the world, and a majority of the Final Fantasy games link crystals and orbs to the planet’s life force. As such, control over these crystals drives the main conflict. The classical elements are also a recurring theme in the series related to the heroes, villains, and items. Other common plot and setting themes include the Gaia hypothesis, an apocalypse, and conflicts between advanced technology and nature. – Source: Wikipedia
