Chances are you’ve seen at least a few Terminator movies. It’s also quite possible you loved the first two movies, and wasn’t too impressed with the third and fourth one. You’re not alone in this of course, as even James Cameron pretty much said the same thing, and he made the first two.
“I feel like the franchise has been reinvigorated, like this is a renaissance,” said the Avatar director. “The new film, which I think of as the third film [in the series], you see [Arnold Schwarzenegger] take the character even further. I had no idea what to expect sitting down, I had no involvement in making this film,” added Cameron. “If you like the Terminator films, you’re gonna love this movie.”
Considering Cameron didn’t make this one either, this is very high praise indeed. And the reason for the praise is that this one doesn’t follow the story even further into the future, where pretty much all we saw in the last one was a robot laser show, but it instead goes back to the beginning. It could actually be called 1.5, I suppose, since it’s taking place between the events from Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
The first thing to notice is that both Sarah Connor and John Connor are both played by actors with the same last name. Sarah Connor will be Game of Thrones’ khaleesi Emilia Clarke, and John Connor will be played by the Australian Jason Clarke. The bigger thing to notice here is that Jason is much older than Emilia. The movie starts in the future, where supposedly John will send back Kyle Reese (played by Jai Courtney) to help Sarah Connor. But when he gets there we can expect a very interesting twist. I’ll just let you read what James Cameron had to say about it after he saw an early screening.
“The idea of taking John Connor and flipping him to the bad guy, it’s kinda cool, because you got to riff against expectations,” said Cameron. “It’s all about the twists.”
We will of course be seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger again, his age explained away by saying that the skin on the outside changes, while the robo-skeleton underneath stays perfect (kinda like the bodybuilder himself). Doctor Who fans will also be delighted to see Matt Smith, and Whiplash fans might be shocked to find J.K. Simmons there. All in all this new Alan Taylor movie promises to be way better than the two before it, so make sure you get a Terminator t-shirt before you go see the premiere on July 2nd.
