ExploreThe Daleks were created by Terry Nation and they first appeared in Doctor Who in 1963. They are the sole reason for why the Whovians were hiding behind their couches when they were watching Doctor Who in the 60s and 70s. Since then the show has had a lot of scary aliens like the Cybermen, the Weeping Angels and the Silence, but none of them ever really surpassed the horror of the Daleks. But why are they so scary?
Daleks are much more than just the robotic screams of EXTERMINATE! coming from a tin can. According to their back story, they used to be capable of real human emotion and they even had morality. They are scary because of what we fear is possible for us as a human race. They are genderless, emotionless, and they have lost their sense of individuality. They are pure intelect trapped inside of a machine, and they have forgotten what emotions are.
But the scary part is that they used to be good. After a long and devastating war, they have retreated into machines to survive. But the longer they stayed inside of the machines, the more they became like the machines. It’s the same reason why we fear the artificial intelligence. Because a being that would raise above the human emotion, would without a doubt see it as a weak spot. If that same being then had the capability to destroy worlds, why would it tolerate weak spots? They make no sense to a being of pure intellect, without any emotion or compassion to restrain it.
In the past, the way to escape Daleks was to run up the stairs, but in the new series they can fly, so there’s no safe place left. They represent pure evil, they hate everything that is not like them, But luckily for us, there is one brave and excentric Time Lord who is always there to throw the nightmares back.
