Street Fighter is Capcom’s second best selling game, second only to Mega Man. The first game in the franchise was released in 1987. You could either play as Ryu as player one, or Ken as player 2. While this was a success in general, they found true success with the release of Street Fighter 2: The World Warrior. This was the first one on one fighting game that allowed the player to pick one character out of several available. When you picked a character you traveled all over the world to fight all the other characters in a tournament.

This was incredibly successful. I remember the arcades having a Street Fighter game for over 10 years, and someone was always dropping coins into it. Every character had it’s own fighting style, with about 30 or so moves that he could do, so naturally everybody had a favorite that they tried to master. A later edition of the game allowed the players to play as one of the four boss characters, and newer editions introduced new characters as well.

Street Fighter 3 introduced almost entirely a new cast of characters, and it wasn’t as successful as the previous installments, but with Street Fighter 4 we got the old characters back. This is playable on both Playstation and XBox, and also introduces online play, returning the franchise to almost it’s early glory days. There have also been several spin off games as well as movies and animated movies about the Street Fighters.

In December 2014 Capcom unintentionally released a teaser trailer for Street Fighter 5, before it quickly removed it. The 5th instalment is supposedly coming next year, and we’re all sitting on the edge of our seats to see if it can be better than Mortal Kombat X.
