ExploreOn Saturday hundreds of thousands joined the LGBT Pride Parade in London, most of them dressed in rainbow colors, just a day after gay marriage was ruled to be legal in all of the states in America. More than 250 groups joined the parade, which was heavily secured after all the recent incidents in France, Tunisia and Kuwait.
Ruth Hunt, who is the chief executive at Stonewall said that the Pride Parade is a wonderful event that celebrates LGBT equality and celebrates how far we’ve come as a society, but even with all the progress there is still a lot to be done in the future.
“The number of reported LGBT hate crimes is on the rise across the UK, our government must address trans-law reform, LGBT people are still being bullied in school and isolated at work, and overseas, many Prides either take place under armed guard or not at all. In fact, it’s illegal to be gay in 75 countries and punishable by death in 10.” – Ruth Hunt
Gay marriage is legal in UK and has been for some time, but it is still banned in Northern Ireland, which was one of the protests heard in London this weekend. At the parade you could see flags from all over the world where gay marriage is allowed, with the USA, Ireland and Mozambique’s flags leading the parade, being the most recent three countries to legalize same sex marriage.
Last year there were 750 thousand people in the parade, and the numbers were probably higher this year. I once read a comment from someone who had an issue with “gay people stealing the rainbow“. The response was brilliant: “We didn’t steal the rainbow. It was always ours because it’s fabulous!“. So get yourself wrapped in a rainbow today, with one of these fabulous Rainbow t-shirts below!
