Selfie tees. Yes, we’ve come this far. Selfies have gotten so huge actually that they were pronounced the word of the year in 2013. Taking pictures of your food is out, now it’s all about taking pictures of yourself. Anywhere, anytime, any place. Went to a concert? Don’t take a picture of the stage, take a picture of yourself. Going to a funeral? Selfie time!

But why do we take so many selfies these days? Well, the obvious answer would be, we’re all obsessed with ourselves, so we need to show every moment of our lives to everyone who wants to see it. But there might actually be more to it than that. Science says that it might just be our anxiety about the future that makes us want to take pictures of ourselves, so that we may be remembered at some point long after we’ve stopped looking the way we do at the moment. And if you think selfies are a new phenomena, just think of all the pictures your parents have hanging on their walls. Or think of all the portraits done throughout the history. It’s been with us since forever. In a way people were making selfies with cave drawings since the stone age.

The only difference if you think about it is that it’s gotten so much easier now with all the good front facing cameras on pretty much every smart phone out there. Not to mention the selfie sticks. I have a friend who spilled some water on the table, and he was more concerned about the selfie stick, than he was about the phone. Anyway, it’s time to embrace it fully. Why fight it, even if you’re not doing it at the moment, you know you will sooner or later. You probably hated texting when it started, and I’m sure you’re texting now.
