Futurama is one of those awesome cartoon series that really shouldn’t be watched by kids, simply because they most likely won’t get half of the jokes that are there. It’s my second favorite animated series, surpassed only by South Park. It was made by the creators of The Simpsons, but I think it is actually quite a bit better than that. The characters are well developed and work really well together. Bender, Fry, Leela, Hermes, Zoidberg, they’re all a bit over the top and caricatures of real characters, but you can easily relate to them.

The opening scene already got me hooked, when Fry gets frozen and the civilization grows outside the window until aliens come and destroy everything. Then it gets rebuilt and aliens destroy it again. And so on. It just shows the kind of humor we’re about to get. It’s happening in the future but it still manages to stay topical and relevant, even though it’s sometimes simply by giving us talking heads of people long dead.

The thing that I love about it the most though is the inside jokes. This show is full of them, full of references to older episodes, giving it a good feeling of continuity, which is a thing that is missing in South Park, or at least was missing until the last season when they kind of started connecting the episodes.

If you’re on Facebook, you get to see tons of memes every day. There’s a good reason why so many of them feature Futurama characters. The show is more than just hilarious. It’s brilliant. If you’ve never seen it before you need to check it out. If you saw one episode and decided you didn’t like it, you need to give it another try. I promise it grows on you.
