In the last few weeks we got the news that the next season of Netflix’s Daredevil will be featuring The Punisher. But who is this Punisher character anyway? He’s a guy who kind of like Batman takes bad guys and stops them. Except he’s way more brutal than pretty much any other super hero. He’s pretty much a sociopath, he actually has a lot in common with Dexter, if Dexter didn’t care who saw him.

He first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man when he mistook Spidey for a bad guy and tried to take him out. He botched it, and after causing a lot of trouble, ran away. After that he became sort of popular, simply because what he was doing wasn’t really done that much in comics before. He just took a look at the world, decided that somebody needs to do something about it, so it might as well be him. He stacked up on all sorts of weapons and started killing.

But there is of course much more to the guy. For starters his whole family got killed in front of him. After which he went to Vietnam, where all the killing seemed to go well with his tortured soul. And he came back, but he was different. Then there’s also the weird story where he dies and comes back as Frankenstein, which I’m on the fence about whether I love it or it’s just ridiculous.

Marvel tried bringing the Punisher to the big screen about 3 times already. The first time it was with Dolph Lundgren in the 80s. In the early naughties, Thomas Jane put on the skull t-shirt and became the Punisher. And then there was also the kind of bad Punisher War Zone. Seeing how good and successful the new Daredevil is on Netflix, this should be a step in the right direction. The Punisher is after all probably the most bad ass character in the Marvel universe so he deserves it.
