Devil May Cry is one of my favorite games ever. When I bought myself a Playstation 2, Devil May Cry 2 was the first game I played on it, and it was simply amazing. You could do so many things with so little effort. Make a double jump, shoot the far away enemies, then while you’re still in the air, take out your sword and slam down on the enemies close to you. And not as a special combo, as a perfectly normal attack. It was so easy and elegant it was hard to believe at the time. Not to mention Dante has a cool hair cut. And then they made a reboot.
But surprisingly against all odds, it’s actually pretty damn good. After the last installment in 2008, even the die hard fans had to admit that the story had pretty much nowhere left to go. So instead of dragging it on, they started it again from the start, but this time in an alternate reality. There’s also a change of pace, tempo and feeling, which does bring the franchise a new kind of life.
Don’t worry, everything that was good about the game, is still in the game. And they also managed to fix a few things that were bothering me before. The one thing that was missing before and is still not nearly as good as it should be is the story telling. The dialogues still feel fake and over the top, at least to me. But while I usually love a great story, with this game I can forget about it and just enjoy the massacre. They did however take away some of the cheesyness, so the characters feel a little more real, and their interactions do feel a bit less cliche.
And that’s pretty much the only drawback about the new game. It is awesome and still amazing to play. If you agree with me, make sure you pick up one of these Devil May Cry t-shirts below.
